Banda de Música Municipal de Caldas de Reis

The Banda de Música Municipal de Caldas de Reis had its official debut at the 1st Xuntanza de Bandas de Música “Vila de Caldas de Reis” on 14 August 2005 under the direction of Milagros Valiño Ferreiro, who was the ensemble’s first principal conductor. Since 2006 the Band has been managed by the Asociación Cultural Mariñoleira, which runs a regular cultural program, a highlight of which is the Xuntanza de Bandas de Música Populares.

In mid-2007 Daniel Portas González became Director of the Band. In the same year the Band took part in the 7th Certamen de Bandas de la Diputación de Pontevedra, winning Second Prize in Division Three. Since then it has taken part in numerous provincial, regional and international contests, including the 123rd and 125th editions of the Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música “Ciudad de Valencia” in 2008 and 2011.

In February 2016 Daniel Portas González passed the baton to Diego Fortes Conde. Under his direction, in 2019, the Band won two First Prizes: the first at the 20th Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música “Villa de Aranda” and the second at the 12th Certame Galego de Bandas de Música Populares.

On 29 December 2019, Diego Fortes gave his farewell concert and the post of director was vacant until 31 July 2021 when it was filled by Javier Penido Ferreiro. Under his baton, in 2022, the ensemble took part in the 15th Certamen Gallego de Bandas de Música Populares and won a Second Prize. Recently, in 2023, the Band participated in the 16th Certame Galego de Bandas de Música Populares and won First Prize in Division One.


Javier Penido Ferreiro

Javier Penido Ferreiro was born in Bandeira, Pontevedra. He began studying music at the Escuela de Música de Bandeira when he was 8 years old, specializing in clarinet and taught by Braulio Cao Ledo. He continued his studies at the Conservatorio Profesional de Lalín with maestros Vanessa Weber and José Luis Taboada Areán, and at the Conservatorio Superior de A Coruña, with maestra Mariola Gil Lago. He graduated in the specialty of clarinet in 2016, receiving the maximum possible grades, and went on to obtain a degree in Orchestra Conducting in 2020, once again receiving the maximum possible grades. He attended clarinet master classes taught by maestros such as Juan Ferrer, Óscar Gómez, Iván Marín, Venancio Rius, Xocas Mejide and Darío Mariño. He collaborated with renowned ensembles such as the Banda Sinfónica de la Comunidad Gallega and the Orquesta Gaos, and was a student of the Orquesta Joven de la Sinfónica de Galicia.

In the field of direction, he has attended master classes taught by Miguel Rodríguez Barrio and Fernando Briones, among others. The ensembles he has directed include the Banda de Música Municipal de A Coruña and the Banda de Música Recreativa e Cultural de Bandeira. He is currently a clarinetist in the Banda de Música Recreativa e Cultural de Bandeira and collaborates with numerous ensembles in the local area. He also teaches clarinet and choir at the Escuela de Música de Bandeira and, since 2021, has divided his time between this job and directing the Banda Municipal de Música de Caldas de Reis.
